[Error] System.Runtime.InteropServices.COM Exception (0x8000FFFF): Catastrophic failure
Hi! Today our MOSSS server stopped working and we needed to force a hard reboot (local login was giving troubles also). After some researching the event viewer logs and the \Reporting Services\LogFiles\ I've discovered the following errors in my main log file: <Header> <Product>Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 9.00.3080.00</Product> <Locale>en-US</Locale> <TimeZone>W. Europe Daylight Time</TimeZone> <Path>****\MSSQL2K5\MSSQL.1\Reporting Services\LogFiles\ReportServerService__main_05_28_2010_07_51_32.log</Path> <SystemName>******</SystemName> <OSName>Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2</OSName> <OSVersion>5.2.3790.131072</OSVersion> </Header> ReportingServicesService!servicecontroller!9!28-5-2010-07:51:31:: e ERROR: Service Maintenance thread caught an exception, restarting Service Maintenance thread. Error Message System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8000FFFF): Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)) at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Utilities.ProcessUtilities.GetPrivateBytes() at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ServiceAppDomainController.CurrentMemoryLimit(Int32& privateMemory) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ServiceAppDomainController.ServiceMaintenance(). This error repeats itself the whole time, till we rebooted the server. I've read some other several comparing posts on this forum but they all were pointing at different things we did not do or have. Thats why I started a new topic. Does anyone know what causes this error and how to solve this? Thank you in advance. Kind regards, Dennis de Vries

Hi Dennis, Based on my experience, the issue may happen when the memory is lower. To troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest you using Performance Monitor(System counter) to monitor the "Free System Page Table Entries". The issue may happen when the "Free System Page Table Entries" is less than 3000. To solve the issue, please move the SQL Server Reporting Services server to a 64 bit server, and add more physical memory for the machine. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Hi Jin, Thank you for your reply. We're currently discussing with the DBA's on how (and when) we are going to solve this. The server doesnt have much memory installed indeed, about 4gb and it's a 32-bit OS. So your description looks like it fits our situation. Kind regards, Dennis.

Hi Dennis, In a 32-bit OS, the application can only use 2GB memory at most. I would suggest you using /3gb as a workaround. For more information about /3gb, please see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291988/en-us Thanks, Jin ChenJin Chen - MSFT
